چکیده

Multithreading is effective to solve latency and synchronization problems which are fundamental issues in parallel processing. One of multithreaded computers, DAVRID has the computational model which is based on dataflow model together with advantages of von Neumann model. In this paper, we introduce some problems of DAVRID through performance evaluation and propose new architecture, MSA(Hybrid Multithreaded Symmetric Multiprocessor Architecture). DAVRID effectively solves latency and synchronization problem in the view of computational model, but has difficulty in exploiting locality in the view of architecture. MSA pursuits efficient parallel processing in the way it inherits the computational model of DAVRID and has symmetric multiprocessor architecture. Simulation result shows that the execution time of MSA is remarkably reduced compared with that of DAVRID, and also high variance of utilization among units is reduced and overall utilization is increased.

Multiple Multithreaded Applications on Asymmetric and Symmetric Chip MultiProcessors

Abstract This paper evaluates new techniques to improve performance and efficiency of Chip MultiProcessors (CMP) for workloads consisting of multiple multithreaded applications. Multithreaded applications contain serial phases (single thread) and parallel phases (many threads). While scheduling threads, current techniques do not differentiate between these two phases, resulting in sub-optimal u...

Bus Utilization Analysis of Multithreaded Shared-bus Multiprocessors:initial Results

A shared-bus shared-memory multiprocessor based on multithreaded CPUs is evaluated against different solutions for cache and coherence protocols. Multithreaded architectures have been intensively studied for DSM multiprocessors, where memory latencies are a major factor in limiting performance. They can be interesting also for bus-based multiprocessors, since processor speed are increasing at a...

Achieving multiprogramming scalability of parallel programs on Intel SMP platforms: Nanothreading in the Linux kernel

This paper presents the design and implementation of a nanothreading interface in the kernel of the Linux operating system for Intel Architecture-based symmetric multiprocessors. The objective of the nanothreading interface is to achieve robust performance of multithreaded programs and increased throughput in multiprogrammed shared memory multiprocessors, where multiple parallel and sequential ...

Improving energy efficiency of asymmetric chip multithreaded multiprocessors through reduced OS noise scheduling

The performance of the emerging chip multithreaded symmetric multiprocessors (SMPs) is of great importance to the high performance computing community. However, the growing power consumption of such systems is of increasing concern, and techniques that can be used to increase overall system power efficiency while sustaining performance are very desirable. Operating system (OS) noise can have a ...

Simultaneous Multithreading: Maximizing On-Chip Parallelism - Computer Architecture, 1995. Proceedings., 22nd Annual International Symposium on

This paper examines simultaneous multithreading, a technique permitting several independent threads to issue instructions to a superscalar's multiple functional units in a single cycle. We present several models of simultaneous multithreading and compare them with altemative organizations: a wide superscalar, a fine-grain multithreaded processor, and single-chip, multiple-issue multiprocessing ...
